I thought ood, because some of the smaller ones have four "tentacles".
But I know what you mean with Vashta Nerada, yeah :D

I just selected them all and used gradients. The one on the very top is a different red and has no shading.

Ah, that's what was my problem. I selected them, but they got an ugly white edge. And I couldn't expand the selection to make that edge disappear, so I had to hand colour them.

Gradients, of course!

Usually that's due to having too small of a range selected. On the second menu to the top it has a space where you can decide how strong the selecting tool is. This is automatically set to 32. You can raise it to 220.
